Issue checks from Ramp Checking Account

Overview

Beta. This feature is currently in Beta and is available to eligible Ramp Checking Account customers.

Issue checks from a Ramp Checking Account to create a downloadable check PDF in Ramp. After the check is created or approved, print and deliver the check to the payee; funds are debited only if the payee deposits the check and it clears.

Eligibility for issuing checks

Check issuance is available only for eligible Ramp Checking Account customers whose account is provided by First Internet Bank of Indiana. Ramp Operating Account customers do not have access to this Beta.

If you are not eligible for check issuance, use Bill Pay check payments to have Ramp mail a check to a US-based vendor with a US-based address.

You can issue checks only from the Ramp web app. The feature is not available in the Ramp mobile app.

Users need permission to send outbound transfers from the Ramp Checking Account. Check issuances follow the same transfer approval policy as other Ramp Banking outbound transfers, so an approval may be required before Ramp creates the check PDF.

Issue a check from Ramp Checking Account

Use check issuance when you need to create a paper check from your Ramp Checking Account and deliver it yourself.

  1. Go to Ramp Banking.
  2. Select Move money, then select Issue check.
  3. Enter the payee name and amount.
  4. Add an optional memo.
  5. Submit the check for issuance.
  6. If approval or review is required, wait until the check is approved or the review is complete.
  7. Download the check PDF.
  8. Print and deliver the check to the payee.

The check date defaults to the issuance date and cannot be post-dated. Ramp does not mail checks or email checks on your behalf.

Issued checks are designed for mobile deposit. Plain paper works for mobile deposit and Check 21 image clearing.

Special MICR check stock is only needed if the payee deposits the check at a bank branch that uses a legacy magnetic reader. If the payee can use mobile deposit, print the PDF on plain paper and deliver it by hand, mail, or another method you choose.

Check timing and balances

The check PDF is usually available within seconds to minutes after creation, or after approval if approval is required. Ramp does not debit the funds when the check is issued; funds are debited when the payee deposits the check and it clears.

Issued checks appear as pending payments. The issued check amount is unavailable for use until the check clears, is canceled, or expires. Clearing timing depends on when the payee's bank submits the check and is typically 1-2 business days after submission.

Uncashed checks expire after 6 months. If someone attempts to deposit an expired check, the deposit is declined.

Manage issued checks

Issued checks appear in transfer history as Check withdrawals. You can use transfer history to review check details, download the PDF again, and cancel an undeposited check.

Each issued check includes the check number, payee, amount, issue date, status, memo, and source account. Use these details to reconcile the check against your Ramp Checking Account activity.

Cancel an issued check

You can cancel an issued check any time before the payee deposits it. After cancellation, Ramp issues a stop payment and marks the check as canceled.

  1. Go to Ramp Banking.
  2. Find the Check withdrawal in transfer history.
  3. Open the check details.
  4. Select Cancel.

If the payee attempts to deposit the check after cancellation, the deposit is declined.

Check statuses

Issued checks can move through the following statuses:

StatusMeaning
RequestedThe check is awaiting approval, if approval is required by your transfer policy.
Under ReviewThe check is awaiting Ramp fraud or compliance review.
IssuedThe check was created and the PDF is available to download.
CompletedThe payee deposited the check and funds were debited.
RejectedThe payee attempted to deposit the check, but the deposit was declined.
CanceledThe check was canceled or expired.
ReversedThe check was deposited, but the deposit was later reversed.

Frequently asked questions

Are there fees for issuing checks?

No. Ramp does not charge a fee to issue checks from a Ramp Checking Account.

Can I issue multiple checks at once?

No. Batch check issuance is not supported during the Beta. Create each check individually.

Can I post-date a check?

No. The check date defaults to the issuance date and cannot be changed to a future date.

Can I email a check instead of printing it?

Ramp does not send checks by email on your behalf. After you download the check PDF, you can share it with the payee using the delivery method you choose.

What happens if a check is deposited for the wrong amount?

Ramp matches deposited checks against the issued check record. If the account number, check number, or amount does not match the issued record, the deposit is declined.

Can I use check issuance for payroll?

Ramp can issue a check for a payroll amount, but Ramp does not handle payroll calculation, taxes, paystubs, or payroll file imports. Payroll processing is separate from check issuance.
